NU, La Salle Set Finals Showdown in UAAP Season 87 Volleyball

Manila: Defending champion National University and De La Salle University square off in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday. The best-of-three series opens at 5 p.m., with the Lady Bulldogs, led by reigning MVP Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon, aiming to protect their crown against the formidable Lady Spikers.

According to Philippines News Agency, NU head coach Sherwin Meneses emphasized the importance of staying healthy during the short break leading to the finals. "We have the advantage of having seniors, but as I told them, we need to overcome the one-week preparation with minimal injuries or setbacks. We need to be in peak condition to increase our chances of defending the crown," said Meneses, who is eyeing his first UAAP championship after winning seven PVL titles with Creamline.

La Salle, which defeated NU in the Season 85 finals in 2023, fell short last year after a semifinal exit against UST, who eventually lost to NU in the championship series. "We all know NU. They've been together since high school. And they have a deep connection and experience with one another. So, for us, we really just need to prepare. There's still a lot I need to fix with the team. But if they can show what I expect from them, if we can keep up - and we definitely have a big chance," La Salle head coach Ramil De Jesus said.

Angel Canino and Shevana Laput will spearhead the Lady Spikers, who are seeking their 13th title in 21 final appearances.

Meanwhile, NU hopes to extend its dynasty in the men's division, meeting Far Eastern University in Game 1 of their title showdown at 1 p.m. "We just have to continue what we've been doing - our mindset in every game, every practice. And even if we've already faced them twice, we'll still study what needs to be adjusted," said coach Dante Alinsunurin, who will bank on Buds Buddin and Leo Aringo.

FEU, which handed NU its only loss of the season, is back in the finals for the first time since Season 81 in 2019. "We're focused on the now - how we'll approach the finals," said FEU coach Edd Orcullo. "Being in this position means a lot. We'll keep working. And what's most important is that volleyball is like our lifeline. It's what keeps us going. That's why even hard work feels light. Because we love what we do," Orcullo added.
