OFWs Offered Complimentary Intramuros Tours to Celebrate Migrant Workers’ Day

Manila: Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are being granted free access to guided tours and two heritage attractions in Intramuros, specifically Fort Santiago and Centro de Turismo Intramuros, from May 25 to 31, as announced by the Department of Tourism (DOT) on Wednesday. This initiative is designed to honor OFWs ahead of Migrant Workers' Day, which is observed in the Philippines every June 7. The day celebrates OFWs as modern-day heroes and marks the signing into law of Republic Act (RA) 8042, also known as the Migrant Workers Act of 1995.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOT emphasized that the tours aim to help OFWs and their families or companions reconnect with Philippine history, culture, and identity. The experience will be enriched through immersive storytelling and exploration within the historic district. Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay highlighted the importance of acknowledging the hard work OFWs perform globally, stating that the goal is to express gratitude by providing them an opportunity to reconnect with their families and cultural roots.

Angara-Mathay also mentioned the intention to evoke nostalgia for the days when families would leisurely stroll through Luneta Park, creating cherished memories. The initiative seeks to offer a relaxed and meaningful space for bonding in the historic heart of Manila. Visiting OFWs are required to present a valid Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) and a membership card issued by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. Each eligible OFW is allowed to bring up to four companions.
