Manila: The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) has announced that its Transformation Program plays a crucial role in the reintegration of former rebels into mainstream society.
According to Philippines News Agency, OPAPRU Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento emphasized the importance of the Transformation Program, highlighting success stories such as that of Aljun Intano, a former rebel who has rebuilt his life with the support of the program and local stakeholders. Sarmiento described Intano's journey as a testament to the program's effectiveness in facilitating sustainable transformation through genuine opportunities and trust-building initiatives.
Intano, who now serves as a community leader and president of the United Caraganon For Peace and Development Federation Incorporation, was formerly a guerrilla fighter for the New People's Army in Surigao del Sur. Along with his wife, he survived numerous armed conflicts before deciding to abandon the armed struggle in 2017. Their surrender, facilitated by local indigenous leaders, marked the beginning of their transition to a peaceful mainstream society.
Sarmiento highlighted that Intano's experience, along with those of other former rebels, exemplifies the 'test of faith' faced by peace advocates in Surigao del Sur. He emphasized that the challenge for former rebels is not only about leaving the past behind but also about maintaining trust in the support provided by provincial local government units, national agencies, and local stakeholders to ensure a path toward lasting peace and dignity.
The OPAPRU Secretary also acknowledged the significant collaboration among the military, local government leaders, and Indigenous Peoples' representatives in creating an environment conducive to trust, reintegration, and inclusive growth. He noted that this collective effort ensures the Transformation Program's impact extends beyond policy, offering tangible benefits such as livelihood support, social services, and community participation.
Sarmiento concluded by asserting that the success of the Transformation Program is rooted in collective action. When local stakeholders unite, they not only transform individuals like Intano but also entire communities into spaces characterized by peace, resilience, and shared progress.
