Masbate: Residents of storm-hit Masbate province have received more than PHP2.5 million worth of health aid, including water assistance, from the Department of Health (DOH) 5 (Bicol). Dr. Aurora Teresa Daluro, regional epidemiologist and head of the Public Health Preparedness and Response Unit of DOH-5, stated that the aid comprised drugs and medicines, hygiene kits, breastfeeding kits, surgical masks, and jerry cans to ensure a clean water supply in evacuation centers and affected communities.
According to Philippines News Agency, the department is prioritizing access to essential medicines, clean water, and hygiene materials to prevent disease outbreaks following Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name Bualoi) last month. The DOH continues to conduct Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) monitoring in several affected areas. Test results indicated that several water sources, including open deep wells, failed safety tests, necessitating further interventions to ensure water safety.
Dr. Daluro emphasized that measures are being implemented to address the failed water sources to prevent the spread of illness. Additionally, about 113 evacuees at the Nursery Elementary School Evacuation Center have received psychosocial interventions to help them cope and recover emotionally from the displacement caused by the storm. The DOH is addressing both the physical health and the mental and emotional well-being of evacuees through psychosocial support programs.
During President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s visit on October 1, a total of PHP3 million in financial aid was allocated to Masbate for repairing damaged health facilities.
