‘Opong’-Ravaged Masbate Declares State of Calamity

Masbate: The provincial government of Masbate has declared a state of calamity following the devastation caused by Typhoon Opong. The declaration was made after the Sangguniang Panlalawigan approved the measure in a special session on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Governor Richard Kho stated in an interview on Saturday that 16,302 families, or 57,113 individuals, have been affected by the typhoon. Kho noted that the numbers are expected to rise as reports continue to arrive.

Opong impacted the province with strong winds and heavy rainfall, resulting in extensive infrastructure damage, destruction of homes, displacement of families, and losses in agriculture and livelihood. Essential services were also disrupted, and seven casualties have been recorded so far.

Governor Kho emphasized the urgent need for assistance in the province. He mentioned ongoing efforts to clear roads along the national highways and the collaboration with national agencies to provide necessary food packs to the affected population. The province requires immediate support in the form of food, potable water, power, shelter, and medical assistance.

As an island province, Masbate faces significant challenges, particularly in providing shelter for displaced families. Governor Kho also called for livelihood support for farmers and fisherfolk whose sources of income were severely impacted by the storm.
