Ormoc city: A fast craft en route to Cebu City was safely escorted back to the port of Ormoc City in Leyte after passengers reported heavy smoke onboard, prompting a rapid response from local rescue authorities.

According to Philippines News Agency, shortly after the Supercat vessel departed Ormoc at 9 a.m., a concerned passenger alerted the local government unit about smoke emanating from the fast craft, causing alarm among those onboard. The Ormoc City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) - Water Search and Rescue immediately responded by deploying its rescue boat 'Lucy.'

The rescue vessel was launched within eight minutes of the initial notification and reached the Supercat near Cawit, Camotes in just 19 minutes, demonstrating what officials described as an efficient response. After establishing communication with the fast craft, the CDRRMO team coordinated closely with the vessel's captain. Following his request, the rescue team escorted the vessel back to Ormoc, ensuring the safe return of all passengers and crew. The vessel docked without further incident.

The city government commended the CDRRMO personnel for their readiness, coordination, and dedication to public safety, noting that their swift action helped prevent the situation from escalating and ensured the fast craft's safe and secure return. Ormoc City serves as the major gateway of Leyte Island to Cebu with 12 fast craft departures daily and regular slow boat trips.
