Over 118,000 Supported by Philippine Army in Disaster Response Missions Amid Typhoon Uwan

Manila: Philippine Army (PA) troops engaged in rescue, relief, and clearing missions have so far aided 118,617 individuals affected by the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong) in Luzon. In a statement, PA spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said the assisted individuals are equivalent to 35,481 families, including those taking temporary shelter in 2,603 evacuation centers.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Army redirected its resources toward saving lives amid widespread power outages and heavy rainfall, building on the suspension of ongoing military drills. The PA's humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) units also assisted 56,459 individuals in returning to their homes as the weather improved.

In Bicol, personnel from the 9th Infantry Division's Task Force Sagip were instrumental in carrying out relief and rescue efforts following the widespread flooding and damage caused by the super typhoon. Meanwhile, the 5th Infantry Division helped clear debris-laden roads and restore access to communities cut off due to landslides in Northern Luzon. Their efforts also included preemptive evacuation of residents in high-risk areas and distributing relief items to displaced families.

The 7th Infantry Division also played a crucial role by preemptively evacuating residents living along the coastal villages of Aurora ahead of Uwan's landfall in Dipaculao town. "The PA assures the affected communities and families that they can count on the strong, dependable, and committed soldiers in the subsequent post-typhoon relief and recovery efforts," Dema-ala stated.
