Iloilo City: Over 200 drivers in Iloilo have undergone a surprise random drug test, resulting in one tricycle driver testing positive for illegal drug use. The initiative was conducted by the Land Transportation Office Region 6 (LTO-6), in cooperation with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
According to Philippines News Agency, the random drug test was executed at the Ungka and Tagbak terminals in Iloilo City, involving 214 drivers who submitted their urine samples. LTO-6 assistant regional director Jeck Conlu stated that the driver who tested positive will have their specimen sent to Manila for confirmatory testing.
The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure commuter safety by promoting a drug-free public transport system. Conlu highlighted that drivers entering or passing through the terminals were encouraged to participate in the testing.
Additionally, Conlu disclosed that four other drivers who tested positive during the Holy Week operations have had their licenses officially revoked. The revocation order was received by LTO-6 Regional Director Atty. Gaudioso Geduspan II from their central office.
The actions taken reflect the agency's commitment to implementing the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon to enhance public transport safety and minimize road accidents.
