Manila: Over 45,522 transport network and delivery drivers in Metro Manila have received PHP5,000 each in cash assistance during the latest round of special payouts, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). The initiative is part of the agency's efforts to provide relief through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD spokesperson Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao confirmed that the special payout for Transport Network Company (TNC) drivers proceeded smoothly, with recipients including Grab, JoyRide, and inDrive drivers. The total disbursements reached PHP227.61 million, aiding a significant number of drivers and riders affected by economic challenges.
Dumlao highlighted that Grab recorded the highest number of beneficiaries, with 37,344 drivers, including Move It riders, receiving cash aid amounting to PHP186.72 million. JoyRide served 4,300 beneficiaries with disbursements totaling PHP21.50 million, while inDrive supported 3,878 beneficiaries with PHP19.39 million in aid.
The highest single-day payout occurred on Saturday (May 16), when 8,172 beneficiaries received assistance totaling PHP40.89 million. Dumlao noted the efficiency of the company-based payout setup, which improved the flow of distribution operations and beneficiary verification.
Dumlao emphasized the benefits of coordinating with TNCs to enhance verification processes and prevent overcrowding at payout sites. She also praised participating companies for securing accessible payout venues for their drivers and riders.
Beneficiaries are reminded that payout operations will continue next week, and they are urged to monitor announcements from their respective companies. These special payout operations are part of the national government's ongoing interventions under the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) framework, following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to assist sectors impacted by rising fuel prices and economic pressures.
