Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) is set to deploy extensive security measures for the upcoming 'White Ribbon Movement' rally scheduled at the EDSA People Power Monument on June 28. The action aims to maintain peace and order during the event.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has instructed the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and related regional offices to conduct a detailed security threat assessment around the EDSA People Power Monument and nearby critical locations. Despite respecting the public's right to peaceful assembly, the PNP will remain focused on maintaining public order and safety during the rally, Nartatez stated.
He further mentioned that strategic security assessments have been initiated, and the NCRPO, along with local units, has been directed to exercise maximum tolerance while enforcing traffic management and civil disturbance protocols. The primary goal is to ensure that the 'White Ribbon Movement' march remains peaceful and minimizes disruptions to the commuting public and nearby businesses.
The NCRPO has announced the deployment of 9,533 police officers across Metro Manila for the 'White Ribbon March.' NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo confirmed in a message to reporters that this deployment is a proactive measure, as there is no current threat.
The rally is organized by religious and civil society groups, led by the Interreligious Leaders Council for National Transformation, to advocate for electoral reforms, stronger government accountability, and action against corruption and political dynasties. The event is expected to attract participants from various faith-based organizations and civil society groups.
Brig. Gen. Melecio Buslig Jr., acting director of the Eastern Police District (EPD), stated that a significant number of police personnel have been deployed around the EDSA Shrine to ensure public order and participant safety. The EPD is committed to upholding human rights and working with partner agencies and local government units to guarantee a peaceful assembly.
Furthermore, personnel from the District Headquarters and police stations in Pasig, Mandaluyong, Marikina, and San Juan City will remain on standby, ready to provide immediate support and response if needed.
The PNP has assured participants and the public that all deployed personnel will observe the principles of maximum tolerance and uphold human rights throughout their duties.
