Zamboanga: Operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) seized smuggled cigarettes worth more than PHP6.1 million and arrested three individuals in separate operations in Zamboanga on June 11 and 13.
According to Philippines News Agency, CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II stated that the first operation, conducted in Barangay Baclay, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur, led to the seizure of 50 master cases of cigarettes allegedly lacking the required graphic health warnings and valued at PHP2.85 million. During this operation, two male suspects were caught transporting the tobacco products and were arrested.
In a statement, Morico noted that Republic Act 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law, requires all tobacco product packaging to carry highly visible, picture-based health warnings to communicate the dangers of smoking.
In a separate operation on June 13, authorities arrested a male suspect in Barangay San Roque, Zamboanga City, while allegedly transporting 22 master cases of assorted cigarettes without the required customs permits and Bureau of Internal Revenue tax stamps. The seized cigarettes were valued at PHP3,249,887.
Morico also cited Republic Act 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, which seeks to protect government revenue, prevent customs fraud and other unlawful activities, and modernize customs administration. The CIDG assured the public that it remains committed to enforcing the law and intensifying efforts against individuals and groups involved in the trade, distribution, and manufacture of illicit, substandard, and smuggled cigarettes nationwide.
