Tupi: The Philippine Army (PA) announced its plans to investigate the incident involving a 16-year-old student who was apprehended with an Army-issued Glock 17 9mm pistol while attempting to enter a public school in Tupi, South Cotabato on July 7.

According to Philippines News Agency, PA spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala emphasized that the Army will conduct a thorough investigation and will not condone any negligence by its personnel in the management of issued firearms. Col. Dema-ala asserted that the Army is committed to ensuring accountability and will follow existing policies related to the responsibility of issued weapons.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) credited a timely report from a concerned citizen for preventing a potentially dangerous situation. Police operatives intercepted the minor on the national highway in Barangay Poblacion, Tupi, South Cotabato. Along with the pistol, two magazines loaded with 32 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the student.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm was issued to the student's older brother, an active member of the PA serving with the 6th Infantry Battalion, 6th Infantry Division. Authorities stated that the minor took the weapon without his brother's knowledge, claiming it was for self-defense.
