Manila: The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has pledged its full support for the ongoing World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series in Baler, Aurora, aiming to bolster sports tourism and elevate the country's status as a premier surfing destination.

According to Philippines News Agency, PAGCOR chairman and chief executive officer Alejandro Tengco expressed pride in sponsoring a global league that attracts elite surfers to iconic waves worldwide, including renowned Philippine surfing sites such as Siargao, La Union, and Baler. Tengco emphasized the significance of the WSL Series in showcasing emerging surfing talents and highlighting the world-class waves of the Philippines.

Tengco noted that the event, which commenced on November 17 and will continue until November 23, provides Filipino surfers with a larger platform to exhibit their skills while promoting sustainable coastal development in surf communities. He expressed optimism about the success of the WSL Challenger Series and the potential for more Filipino surfers to make a mark on the international surfing scene.

The WSL serves as the leading global platform for professional surfing, organizing top-tier competitions throughout the year in celebrated surf destinations. The Challenger Series acts as a crucial qualifying arena for athletes aspiring to join the elite WSL Championship Tour, drawing seasoned professionals and rising stars from around the globe.

The Philippines has been a significant part of the WSL circuit, with Siargao hosting league-sanctioned events for the past 29 years. The country's consistent involvement in the global surfing event has elevated local shores, particularly Cloud 9 in Siargao, as well as surf hubs in Baler and La Union, into key destinations for both athletes and adventure tourists.
