Manila: National Security Adviser Secretary Eduardo A±o will remain in his post despite ongoing health issues and the administration's recent Cabinet adjustments, Malaca±ang confirmed. A±o, a former Armed Forces chief of staff and Interior secretary, has been dealing with health concerns since the Covid-19 pandemic but has chosen to continue serving in his current capacity, according to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro.
According to Philippines News Agency, Castro stated, "Secretary A±o has been dealing with health issues ever since the time of the pandemic. However, he has kindly agreed to stay with the NSC [National Security Council] as he feels he can still contribute," during a press briefing at the Palace.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. supports A±o's decision to stay on, citing his competence and good performance. "The President agrees that he can continue to do the fine job he has been doing. So, maaari pong manatili si Secretary A±o hangga't kakayanin ng kanyang kalusugan (Secretary A±o may remain in his post for as long as his health permits)," Castro added.
The clarification comes amid a series of leadership changes in the Marcos administration, including recent replacements in key Cabinet positions as part of what officials describe as a strategic 'recalibration.' A±o was appointed National Security Adviser in January 2023, succeeding Clarita Carlos.
Malaca±ang gave no timeline for how long A±o is expected to remain in office, noting that any future changes will depend on his health and personal decision. In a statement, A±o thanked the President for his trust and confidence and vowed to continue delivering results. "I thank him for understanding my health concerns," A±o said. "And, while I am the National Security Adviser, I assure him of my continuing commitment to our shared goals and objectives in serving the Filipino people and delivering results that benefit our country and advancing the national interest at all times."
