Manila: Malaca±ang announced Friday that no immediate energy lockdown is anticipated, as the government continues its efforts to secure alternative fuel sources amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Claire Castro, from the Palace Press Office, reassured the public in a press briefing that the administration is striving to prevent a worst-case scenario, such as an energy lockdown.
According to Philippines News Agency, Castro emphasized that the government is preparing for potential disruptions in the global oil supply while maintaining hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. She mentioned that discussions are underway with India, Argentina, Canada, and other countries, which do not depend on the Middle East for petroleum products, to ensure a steady fuel supply for the Philippines.
Castro urged the public to pray for an agreement to resolve the Middle Eastern conflict, highlighting the significant impact should it remain unresolved. She also mentioned Energy Secretary Sharon Garin's statement regarding efforts to increase power supply from various sources such as coal, renewable energy, and Malampaya-generated power. The government is assisting renewable energy developers to expedite their projects, with 500 MW already completed and another 500 MW in progress.
Furthermore, Castro stated plans to procure diesel for the National Power Corp. to ensure stable power supply in off-grid areas and prevent blackouts in the islands. She called on solar companies to fulfill their commitments to help stabilize the country's power supply.
In a separate matter, Castro addressed concerns about President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s image being used in aid distribution materials, which could violate the anti-'epal' provision in the General Appropriations Act. The President has ordered the removal of a tarpaulin bearing his image during a cash assistance distribution. Castro clarified that while there are criticisms regarding the President's visibility, the public should know these are government projects, reinforcing that the President is actively working for the citizens.
