Palace Issues Warning to Saboteurs Amidst Corruption Crackdown

Manila: Malaca±ang on Monday assured the country's biggest business groups that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is acting on mounting corruption concerns, but warned individuals allegedly attempting to derail the probe to 'stop sabotaging' reforms.

According to Philippines News Agency, the statement followed a joint resolution by 34 major business organizations urging the President to swiftly address what they called a 'historic, massive and unprecedented corruption scandal' in public works. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Marcos has already taken steps against corruption, citing the creation of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), which is now investigating alleged irregularities in flood control and other public works projects spanning the past decade.

She mentioned that the ICI has already ordered asset freezes, issued immigration lookout bulletins, and recommended the filing of charges against implicated officials and contractors. However, Castro criticized those allegedly sowing doubt to discredit the ongoing probe, urging them to desist as it is detrimental to the economy.

Castro emphasized that the President is attuned to the business sector's frustrations and is committed to expediting investigations and actions. When questioned about legislative support for enhancing the ICI's legal authority, Castro stated that while it would be beneficial, the current progress of the investigation is satisfactory.

Meanwhile, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla inspected the newly constructed Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)'s Quezon City Jail - Male Dormitory to ensure its readiness for any potential indictments related to the ongoing flood-control scandal. The facility, with 80 unoccupied dorms, is equipped to ensure cleanliness and comfort for Persons Deprived of Liberty, providing amenities such as purified drinking water and areas for exercise.

Remulla assured that no special treatment will be given to any detainees, regardless of their status or position.
