Malaca±ang: Malaca±ang on Friday reminded Vice President Sara Z. Duterte's camp that 'no one is above the law' after her legal team urged a Quezon City court to hear oral arguments on her motion to quash the grave threats case filed against her.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Palace issued the statement after Duterte's legal team filed a manifestation seeking oral arguments on the motion, citing its 'far-reaching consequences.' Duterte's counsel for the grave threats case, lawyer Paul Lawrence Lim, argued that prosecuting a sitting Vice President could set a precedent for other impeachable officials currently in office, including the President.

Lim stated that if a sitting Vice President could be indicted and prosecuted, 'then other incumbent impeachable officers such as the Ombudsman, members of the Constitutional Commissions, Supreme Court justices, and even the President, may also be indicted and prosecuted.'

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro criticized the Duterte camp's argument, describing it as another 'threat' against President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. She also called on Duterte and her legal team to end the 'infamous culture for which they are known.'

'Are they issuing yet another threat? It appears to be the same narrative,' Castro said. 'However, we must remember that no one is above the law. Anyone who violates the law or abuses their authority must face the consequences of their actions,' she added.

Castro emphasized that a sitting elected official may still be subject to impeachment when there are sufficient grounds. 'In fact, any impeachable official may be impeached provided there are valid grounds, rather than cases built on fabricated evidence and paid false witnesses,' she said.

The grave threats case stems from Duterte's remarks during an online press conference on Nov. 23, 2024, when she said she had contracted someone to kill Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and then-House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she herself were killed.
