Palace Upbeat on Positive Outcome of PH-US Negotiations on Tariff Deal

Manila: Malaca±ang on Tuesday expressed optimism that the ongoing negotiations between the Philippines and the United States on the paused 17-percent reciprocal tariff on Philippine exports would yield a positive outcome. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the Philippine government hopes the outcome of the talks would be 'good' for the country and its economy.

According to Philippines News Agency, Castro remarked in a Palace press briefing that she believes the Philippines is in a favorable position regarding the trade deal negotiations. She emphasized the mutual agreement between the two nations, highlighting the cooperation aimed at fostering economic development in the Philippines. "Dahil ang dalawang bansa naman po - ang Pilipinas at ang US - ay nagkaroon po ng pagkakasundo na magkakaroon po ng kooperasyon para sa economic development naman po ng Pilipinas," she said.

US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson previously indicated that both countries are working diligently to finalize a trade agreement as Manila negotiates the reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Trump had announced a 90-day pause on the higher reciprocal tariffs on April 9, targeting the Philippines and other trading partners, although a blanket 10-percent duty remains in place.

The new tariff rollout was initially scheduled for July 9, but Trump extended the deadline for trade talks to August 1. Malaca±ang has conveyed that the government is prepared for any potential fallout from the trade discussions with the US.
