Palarong Pambansa Kicks Off in Laoag with President Marcos as Guest of Honor

Laoag: The 65th Palarong Pambansa commenced with a grand opening ceremony at Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium, featuring President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as the guest of honor. The event marked a significant return of the annual sporting meet to the President's home province after 57 years.

According to Philippines News Agency, the ceremony began with a vibrant 'Parada ng mga Atleta' showcasing regional delegations. Education Secretary Sonny Angara introduced the President, while Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Manotoc delivered the welcome message. A highlight of the opening was the ceremonial lighting of the solar-powered cauldron by Ilocano athletes, symbolizing the spirit and energy of the event.

The Palarong Pambansa gathers 15,675 delegates from 18 regions, including the National Academy of Sports and Philippine Overseas Schools. The competition features 24 regular sports, such as athletics, basketball, and swimming, with weightlifting introduced as a demonstration sport. Exhibition events include kickboxing, girls' football, and girls' futsal. The tournament also emphasizes inclusivity with a special category for athletes with disabilities, featuring para-athletics and para-swimming.

The event, organized by the Department of Education, carries the theme 'Nagkakaisang Kapuluan' (United Archipelago). The program included performances inspired by Ilocano cultural history and notable figures like Olympian Teofilo Yldefonso. Prodigy Gerick Jhon Flores led the Oath of Athletes, while Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz led the Oath of Coaches and Technical Officials.

The opening ceremony concluded with a performance by singer Angeline Quinto, who sang 'Ako ay Pilipino,' celebrating nationalism and Filipino identity. The competition will continue with exhibition games, followed by the main events from May 26 to 30, and the closing ceremony on May 31.
