Pangasinan: The provincial government of Pangasinan is granting a total of PHP5 million in cash aid through its Tulong Kapatid program to five calamity-stricken local government units (LGUs) and provinces to aid in their disaster relief and rehabilitation efforts. Vice Governor Mark Ronald Lambino stated that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed five resolutions authorizing the grant of PHP1 million in financial assistance to each affected LGU. These include Bogo City, Cebu, which was impacted by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake, and the provinces of Cagayan, Batanes, and Masbate, along with Calayan Island, which suffered from Super Typhoon Nando and Tropical Storm Opong.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lambino clarified that granting cash assistance to other LGUs is not legally mandated but is based on the provincial government's capacity to extend support. He mentioned that Pangasinan has received similar assistance in the past, most recently after the effects of the southwest monsoon a few years ago.
The funding for the assistance was sourced from the province's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Fund. Lambino noted, "Since the year is about to end, and we still have funds available, that is what we are extending. So we did not take it from our general fund." He added that the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office is currently assessing other LGUs to assist, based on the province's available resources.
