Pangasinan: The provincial government of Pangasinan is considering a temporary reduction in road maintenance and quarry extraction fees to mitigate the impact of the recent fuel price hike.

According to Philippines News Agency, Vice Governor Mark Ronald Lambino mentioned in a phone interview that this initiative aims to reduce the fees for quarry operations and road maintenance by up to 30 percent. The measure targets alleviating the financial strain on local businesses involved in transporting goods and quarry materials due to increased fuel costs.

The proposal, currently being reviewed at the committee level, suggests a six-month adjustment period. The fees are expected to revert to their original rates after this period, with a possibility of review before the amendment's provisions conclude. The implementation of this ordinance is planned for June.

Lambino stated that the fee reduction could lead to an estimated PHP5 million monthly decrease in provincial collections, totaling PHP30 million over the six months. The provincial treasurer's assessment supports these figures.

Despite the anticipated reduction in revenue, the province's initial collections for the first quarter have exceeded targets, providing some financial cushioning. Additionally, savings from the cancellation of the Pistay Dayat (Sea Festival) activities may offset the shortfall in collection, Lambino noted.
