Pangasinan: The inflation rate in Pangasinan rose to 2.6 percent in May 2025, up from 1.8 percent in April, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Region 1. PSA Pangasinan chief statistical specialist Edgar Norberte stated that the increase was mainly driven by higher costs in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, which accounted for 82.2 percent of the inflation uptrend.
According to Philippines News Agency, the surge was particularly evident in electricity, which experienced an inflation rate of 8.7 percent in May, compared to -4.5 percent in April. Housing rentals also saw a significant rise, moving up to 3.8 percent from 0.8 percent. Additionally, restaurants and accommodation services contributed 13.7 percent to the inflation increase, also posting an 8.7 percent inflation rate in May.
The clothing and footwear category contributed 1.7 percent, with shoes and other footwear seeing an increase from 5.6 percent in April to 7.6 percent in May. Other commodity groups with higher inflation in May included alcoholic beverages and tobacco, which rose to 1.0 percent from 0.9 percent. Furnishings and household maintenance saw an increase to 1.7 percent from 1.3 percent, while recreation, sports, and culture climbed to 3.6 percent from 3.5 percent. Personal care and miscellaneous goods/services increased to 4.3 percent from 4.1 percent.
Meanwhile, food and non-alcoholic beverages experienced a decrease in inflation, dropping to 2.3 percent in May from 3.0 percent in April, which was attributed to increased supply from dry season cropping. However, the Department of Agriculture Ilocos Region warned of potential food price increases with the onset of the rainy season, though mitigation measures are in place.
Transport inflation continued its downward trend, dropping further to -3.6 percent, while inflation rates for health and information and communication remained steady at 0.8 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.
