Pangasinan Launches 10-Year River Restoration and Flood Control Project

Pangasinan: The provincial government of Pangasinan has initiated a comprehensive 10-year river restoration project aimed at enhancing flood management across the region. Governor Ramon Guico III announced that the government has collaborated with a private entity to commence dredging and desilting operations on major river systems, starting with Limahong Channel in Lingayen and Nayum River in Dasol.

According to Philippines News Agency, the governor assured that all desilting activities will be meticulously monitored to prevent overdredging, with the financial responsibilities being borne by the private partner. Emphasizing the importance of adherence to existing regulations, Guico stated, "Let us be assured that the province will be strictly guided by our current ordinance. So, we will be responsible for maintaining this program."

The initiative encompasses several key components such as inland dredging, solid waste management, tree planting along riverbanks, and support for local government-led cleanup efforts. Guico highlighted the environmental challenges, noting that some river areas have been turned into dumping grounds, impacting local habitats. He also mentioned that dredging activities would extend to inland communities where creeks and rivers flow.

The provincial government plans to support local government units by providing necessary equipment for river cleanup activities. Additionally, a new flood management department will be established to supervise and sustain these initiatives over the long term. Guico emphasized that the project will include scientific studies, disaster risk reduction measures, and community involvement as part of its long-term strategy.
