Pangasinan Town Wins P1-M for Marine Protection Project

Bani: The municipal government of Bani has received PHP1 million for the rehabilitation of the Bangrin pavilion at the mangrove marine protected area as an initial cash prize after winning the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan: Search for Most Outstanding Coastal Community in the Ilocos Region, organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

According to Philippines News Agency, municipal agriculturist Jeffrey Pamo stated that the pavilion will serve as a viewing area of the around 40-hectare mangrove plantation, where they could also conduct 'nature and lecture' sessions as well as bird watching. Pamo highlighted that marine protected areas are crucial for fostering the protection and preservation of the environment. The municipality plans to expand its mangrove plantation, enhancing the area as a sanctuary for fish and migratory birds.

Additionally, the remaining PHP1 million from their total PHP2 million cash prize will be allocated to coral protection and seaweed production development. Pamo mentioned that the fisherfolk, who often venture out despite dangerous weather, will benefit from alternative livelihoods like seaweed production, especially during adverse seasons.

The town's prior cash prize for winning first runner-up in the same contest in 2022, worth PHP1 million, was utilized for a livelihood program and fishing materials such as fish coolers and fish nets. Bani's victory in 2023 is attributed to its comprehensive marine protection programs that focus on maintaining marine protected areas, law enforcement, and community development involving local communities in government initiatives.

Mayor Facundo Palafox Jr. remains committed to environmental conservation, stressing the importance of a balanced ecosystem for future generations. Meanwhile, BFAR Ilocos Region Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan praised the winners for their dedication to sustainable fisheries management, encouraging other coastal communities to adopt responsible fishing practices.
