Pangasinan: The local government units of Malasiqui and San Fabian towns have ordered the implementation of modular distance learning in the afternoon classes in all public schools due to the high heat index, while Asingan town LGU has ordered automatic cancellation with temperature above 40 degrees Celsius.

According to Philippines News Agency, Malasiqui Mayor Noel Anthony Geslani issued an executive order mandating public schools to conduct face-to-face classes only from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., shifting to modular distance learning in the afternoons from March 10 to 14. Private schools in the area may choose to adopt similar policies at their discretion.

San Fabian Mayor Marlyn Agbayani issued a similar directive, citing the health and safety risks posed by the high heat index. In Asingan, Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr. mandated automatic class suspensions when temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

School authorities have the flexibility to opt for modular or online learning, ensuring that educational objectives are still met through performance tasks, projects, or makeup classes. Private schools have the discretion to adjust their schedules accordingly.

Meanwhile, Mangatarem and Sta. Barbara suspended classes last week after the heat index reached 45 degrees Celsius. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Dagupan chief Jose Estrada Jr. explained that the rising heat index is due to the transition from the northeast monsoon to the easterly wind flow.

Heat indexes in the region have previously exceeded 50 degrees Celsius in 2024. Health officials have urged the public to stay hydrated and avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
