Manila: Gender-based violence in Central Visayas declined by 3.25 percent in January and February.
According to Philippines News Agency, the report from Police Regional Office-7 (PRO-7) Women and Children Protection Desk of the Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division highlighted that the Crime Incident Reporting and Analysis System recorded 447 cases, which is lower by 15 than the 462 cases reported during the same period last year.
The PNP noted that the most frequently reported offenses are related to Republic Act 9262, known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act. The decrease in reported cases has been credited to enhanced community awareness programs, greater law enforcement efforts, and the implementation of protective measures for vulnerable populations.
PRO-7 has also improved its response through the establishment of women's help desks in various police units and stations. These desks are staffed by police officers who are specially trained to assist women in filing cases and accessing necessary legal and social support.
"This initiative has been further strengthened by ongoing police training and community outreach programs, all aimed at addressing these critical issues and fostering a safer environment for individuals impacted by gender-based violence," stated PRO-7 chief Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan.
