Pangasinan: The National Power Corp. (NPC) has issued a notice regarding the preparatory phase for dam discharge warning operations as the San Roque Dam in Pangasinan has reached a water level of 273.08 meters above sea level. This development has prompted alerts in various towns across the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, NPC-San Roque Dam office flood operation manager Teresa Serra mentioned in a phone interview that one gate of the dam might be opened at 0.5 meters at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, should the rainfall continue. The intended release of 60 to 70 cubic meters per second is a precautionary measure to reduce the water elevation of San Roque Dam, with minimal impact expected on the river systems.
The dam's current spilling level is set at 280 meters above sea level. Serra highlighted that they are continuously monitoring weather conditions, especially with the southwest monsoon affecting the area, while Ambuklao and Binga dams continue to release water into San Roque Dam.
The notice advises residents to stay alert and prepare for potential spilling operations if significant rainfall from the southwest monsoon affects the basin. The warning was issued to Pangasinan's Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and local offices in towns such as San Manuel, San Nicolas, Asingan, Tayug, Sta. Maria, Rosales, Villasis, Sto. Tomas, Alcala, Bautista, and Bayambang.
Serra urged local authorities to quickly disseminate the information to residents, especially those living near riverbanks. Relevant dam information and warnings will be issued based on weather developments. Residents are advised to remain vigilant until further updates are provided.
Some areas in Pangasinan continue to suffer from flooding due to swollen river systems and heavy rainfall, exacerbated by previous weather disturbances and the southwest monsoon.
