Abu dhabi: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged for enhanced global cooperation and reforms in international financing mechanisms to expedite sustainable development and climate initiatives during his address to global leaders and experts at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos highlighted the importance of sustainability as a collective global responsibility, necessitating joint efforts from governments, the private sector, and civil society. He emphasized that ADSW serves as a crucial platform for synchronizing policies, technologies, and investments to achieve sustainable outcomes.

During his working visit to the UAE, Marcos aimed to bolster bilateral relations between Manila and Abu Dhabi, particularly in trade, defense, and sustainable development cooperation. He reiterated the Philippines' dedication to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and stressed integrating climate action, adaptation, and economic development in the country's agenda.

Marcos addressed common challenges faced by developing economies, including rising debt and limited access to development finance. He called for reforms in global financial institutions to make climate and development financing more equitable and accessible, particularly for climate-vulnerable nations.

The President referred to discussions from the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Spain, noting the global financial architecture's inadequacy. He advocated for increased climate finance, effective use of concessional financing, and support for disaster risk reduction and sustainable infrastructure.

At the national level, Marcos highlighted the Philippines' community-led approach to climate resilience, emphasizing the People's Survival Fund as a mechanism supporting vulnerable communities. He also underscored the administration's 'Whole-of-Nation PLUS' approach, which enhances partnerships and inclusivity, contributing to progress in clean energy and responsible consumption.

Marcos reiterated the administration's focus on accelerating the energy transition through the expanded use of renewable energy as part of the long-term goals. ADSW, hosted annually by the UAE, gathers global leaders and experts to promote innovative solutions and collective action on climate change and sustainable development.
