Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially handed over PHP132.9 million in agricultural assistance to support farmers and fisherfolk in Davao de Oro. This initiative involves the distribution of critical farming and fishing equipment, including a rice combine harvester, a four-wheel tractor, high-density polyethylene pipes for vegetable irrigation, and four motorized fiberglass boats.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Agriculture (DA) complemented these efforts by distributing 15,000 tilapia fingerlings, 24,359 bags of certified inbred and hybrid rice seeds, as well as fertilizers aimed at enhancing corn production. These resources are set to benefit rice and corn farmers, irrigators' associations, and registered fisherfolk throughout the province.
DA 11 (Davao Region) Director Macario Gonzaga emphasized that these interventions highlight the government's ongoing commitment to empowering agricultural communities, enhancing productivity, and fostering resilience and sustainability in the region's agricultural sector. To further bolster food accessibility, the DA introduced the Kadiwa Benteng Bigas Meron Na! initiative, which provided 14,000 kg. of affordable rice to designated beneficiaries.
This turnover is a part of the broader governmental strategy to modernize Philippine agriculture, enhance food security, and deliver essential support to farmers and fisherfolk through improved access to machinery, quality farm inputs, and livelihood opportunities.
Gervacio Carreon, president of the Lateral B and C Farmers Irrigators Association in New Bataan town, expressed gratitude for the new tractor provided to their group. He highlighted the challenges they faced in affording private operators for land preparation and how the new equipment will alleviate these difficulties.
Similarly, Anecito Bacalso, president of the Unified Fisherfolk Association in Maco town, thanked the government for the motorized fiberglass boat, noting its potential to significantly boost their income by simplifying fishing activities and transportation.
Governor Raul Mabanglo also expressed his appreciation for the President's visit and support, marking it as the first occasion a sitting president visited their Provincial Capitol. He highlighted the visit as a strong affirmation of the national government's recognition and support for Davao de Oro.
