Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has expressed optimism that the Philippines will be able to sustain its strong economic, diplomatic, and defense relations with the United States under President-elect Donald Trump's leadership. This, as Marcos, during a telephone call with outgoing US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday, emphasized the significant progress in the two nations' bilateral ties.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos highlighted the comprehensive nature of the Philippines-US relationship, which spans economic, diplomatic, and defense aspects. He shared his encouragement over the progress made and expressed a desire to build upon current achievements, focusing on shared values and adherence to international law.
Harris assured bipartisan support within the US Congress and Washington for strengthening ties with the Philippines, particularly in security, economic growth, and cultural connections. She underscored the importance of US support for the Philippines amidst China's actions in the West Philippine Sea.
Harris reaffirmed the US commitment to defending the Philippines, including issues related to the South China Sea. Marcos conveyed his gratitude for Harris's support and acknowledged the productive partnership with the US under outgoing President Joe Biden.
Marcos also noted the evolving nature of the Philippines-US relationship, adapting to modern challenges in the South China Sea and globally. He recalled discussions with Biden, emphasizing the impact of their trilateral agreement with Japan on regional dynamics.
The trilateral cooperation among the Philippines, US, and Japan has been recognized within ASEAN, bolstering the regional bloc's stance on West Philippine Sea issues. Harris highlighted the significance of this trilateral effort in enhancing economic cooperation and regional security.
During a virtual trilateral meeting, Marcos, Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation in maritime security, economic resilience, and technology.
Marcos and Harris have met multiple times, beginning with Harris's visit to Manila in November 2022, and more recently at the APEC conference in San Francisco. Marcos praised Harris's contributions to the Philippines, recognizing her role in fostering collaboration between the two countries.
Before concluding their call, Marcos extended an invitation to Harris to visit the Philippines again. The Philippines and the US have maintained formal diplomatic relations since July 4, 1946, and the US remains the Philippines' oldest and only treaty ally.
The bilateral defense and security relationship is a cornerstone of Philippine-US relations, governed by agreements such as the Mutual Defense Treaty and the Visiting Forces Agreement. In 2023, the US was the Philippines' third-largest trading partner, with trade valued at USD19.96 billion.
