Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday urged Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states to strengthen their laws to keep their digital space safe from cyber threats, including the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). Marcos made the call as he warned of emerging transnational challenges that will require ASEAN member states to work more effectively in addressing cybercrimes.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos highlighted the threat of cybercrimes and the ethical and legal implications of artificial intelligence during the 13th ASEAN Law Ministers Meeting (ALAWMM) at the Manila Grand Hyatt in Taguig City. He emphasized the necessity for ASEAN members to intensify efforts to ensure that the region's growth is sustainable, secure, and rooted in human dignity.

Marcos stressed the importance of a regional legal framework that benefits ASEAN peoples, advocating for laws that govern the digital space fairly and securely. He underscored the role of the law as a great equalizer, particularly in combating corruption, inefficiency, and impunity that undermine the moral foundations of societies.

Expressing gratitude to ASEAN ministers, senior officials, and their partners, Marcos acknowledged their efforts in maintaining the organization's principled and united stance in a complex, interconnected world. He called for continued collaboration to make the Rule of Law a lasting promise for ASEAN, uniting in the belief that justice and fairness transcend borders.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is hosting the 13th ALAWMM from Nov. 14 to 15, reaffirming the Philippines' active role in strengthening and unifying the ASEAN Community based on fairness, mutual trust, and the rule of law. Law ministers from all 11 ASEAN member states are attending the two-day event, which builds on the progress achieved during the 12th ALAWMM and related meetings, with a renewed focus on regional legal resilience, access to justice, and legal innovation amidst evolving global and regional challenges.
