PBBM: Closing Gender Gap is ‘Smart Economics,’ Key to Growth

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on Asia-Pacific leaders to make gender equality a central pillar of economic recovery, describing it as not only a moral imperative but also 'smart economics.' President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. addressed the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting at the Hwabaek International Convention, emphasizing the critical role of gender equality in economic development. He highlighted the necessity of investing in women and youth to foster social and economic stability.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos stressed that closing the gender gap is not merely an issue of fairness but an economic strategy that could potentially add USD28 trillion to global GDP. He urged economies to implement actionable measures to address gender pay disparities and promote women's participation in the workforce.

Marcos further emphasized the need for sustainable digital infrastructure and a workforce prepared for future demands to ensure equal opportunities in the rapidly evolving global market. He pointed out the Philippines' achievements in educational parity and the increasing presence of women in management roles, urging APEC to continue fostering such advancements through policy and collaboration.

The President also noted that empowering women and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) could unlock the private sector's full potential while promoting inclusivity.
