San juan: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday led the reopening of the San Juanico Bridge to heavier vehicles after six months of retrofitting, completing the work ahead of the Christmas holidays. The President lauded the Department of Public Works and Highways for accelerating repairs, allowing 15-ton trucks to cross the iconic bridge connecting Samar and Leyte.

According to Philippines News Agency, the President emphasized the significance of the improvement, as cargo trucks that previously could not cross the bridge will now be able to do so. He noted the enhancement over the initial goal of a 12-ton capacity by year-end. The bridge had been closed to vehicles weighing more than three tons since May 15 due to structural deterioration from aging and weather.

At least PHP520 million from the national disaster fund was allocated for the completed portal shoring and reinforcement works. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon accompanied the President during the inspection of the 2.16-km structure. The bridge still requires an additional PHP650 million to achieve a 30-ton capacity.
