PBBM Directs Protection for Commuters from ‘Abusive’ Drivers

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has instructed the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to implement measures to safeguard commuters from 'abusive' drivers, as announced by Malaca±ang on Thursday. This directive follows the issuance of show cause orders by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to the owners of 1,165 vehicles that did not meet roadworthiness standards.

According to Philippines News Agency, the LTO reported that 671 drivers have been suspended for a range of infractions. Among these, 574 suspensions were related to road crashes leading to physical injuries or fatalities, while 97 drivers were suspended after testing positive for drugs. In response to these issues, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon has initiated the formation of a special task force to review and enhance road safety policies and procedures.

The World Health Organization's Global Status Report on Road Safety 2018 indicates a concerning rise in road traffic deaths in the Philippines, with a fatality rate of 12.3 per 100,000 population, which is notably higher than Europe's rate of 9.3 per 100,000 population. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized the government's commitment to improving road safety with the help of the special task force.

Castro highlighted the importance of ensuring road safety for the public and preventing the abuse of driving privileges. She also expressed support for a proposed measure that would prevent the detention of drivers who can demonstrate 'defense driving' in traffic incidents. Castro noted that while investigations are underway, authorities have the right to detain individuals until a clear determination of fault is made, as part of due process.
