Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is seeking a 'better' policy to address issues concerning online gambling, Malaca±ang said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro highlighted the President's understanding of the challenges faced by families dealing with addiction to online gambling games within their households.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos has expressed sympathy for families who have members struggling with gambling addiction. Castro noted, "The President sympathizes with families who fall victim to this type of gambling because other members of their household have become addicted to gambling." She further added, "The President is looking into that to come up with a better policy on online gambling."
Marcos is considering the proposal from the Department of Finance to regulate and impose taxes on online gaming platforms. Additionally, efforts are underway as the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) work together to eliminate illegal gaming websites.
The DICT has already taken action by removing 7,000 unauthorized online gaming sites identified by PAGCOR, based on data released by Malaca±ang on June 19. Moreover, the Palace urges the public to report individuals who are getting addicted to online gambling to PAGCOR, aiming to restrict their access to these platforms.
