Abu dhabi: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday highlighted the Philippines' drive for clean energy and nuclear safety as he reaffirmed the country's commitment to sustainable development and science-driven cooperation at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2026. In his keynote address during the ADSW dialogue 'Next Leap: Global South Infrastructure,' Marcos emphasized the Philippines' policy reforms, international partnerships, and significant investments aimed at accelerating the country's transition to renewable energy while ensuring the responsible use of nuclear technology.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos pointed to initiatives to expand renewable energy, including fiscal incentives, streamlined regulations, and financing mechanisms such as Green Bonds and the Renewable Energy Trust Fund. He also mentioned the signing of the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act, the country's first comprehensive framework for the safe use of nuclear technology.
Marcos stated that this framework provides a stable environment for scientists and industries to innovate responsibly. He added that it signals the Philippines' readiness to enhance science-driven cooperation with global partners. The President highlighted the Philippines' participation in the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly in Abu Dhabi in January 2025, reinforcing his administration's commitment to clean energy.
Marcos also acknowledged ongoing partnerships with the UAE, including collaboration with renewable firm Masdar. Agreements with Masdar are expected to deliver up to 10 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity backed by USD15 billion in investments, diversifying the Philippines' energy mix and creating green jobs.
He mentioned the Philippines' role in international science-based solutions, such as hosting the International Atomic Energy Agency High-Level Forum on Nuclear Technology for Controlling Plastic Pollution. Marcos reaffirmed the country's commitment to technology and sustainability in his upcoming ASEAN Chairship under the theme 'Navigating Our Future, Together.'
Marcos expressed readiness to collaborate with the international community and civil society to achieve impactful development. He assured that the Philippines will promote a people-centered ASEAN with strengthened cooperation on climate resilience and technology use. He invited support in realizing a vision of an agile and inclusive ASEAN contributing to global solutions.
