Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced the reassignment of PHP255.5 billion, initially earmarked for 2026 flood control projects under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), to fund a range of priority government programs across several departments.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos, during his visit to San Fernando City in La Union, emphasized that this budget reallocation is aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of initiatives that directly benefit the population. Notably, PHP36 billion will be directed to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, targeting various programs such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program and other social welfare initiatives.
Furthermore, a news release from the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) highlighted that PHP26.55 billion will be funneled into the Department of Education. This funding is designated for the construction and improvement of classrooms, and will also support feeding programs, indigenous education, and other educational initiatives.
The reallocation also includes a transfer of PHP9.3 billion to the Commission on Higher Education, PHP1 billion to the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and PHP450 million to the Philippine Science High School System. The Department of Agriculture is set to receive PHP39.37 billion to support various agricultural initiatives, including post-harvest facilities and crop insurance.
In addition, the Department of Agrarian Reform will receive PHP600 million for the Beneficiaries' Development and Sustainability Program and the Land Tenure Security Program. The Department of Health is allocated PHP29.28 billion for medical assistance and support for hospitals, alongside treatment initiatives for children with cancer.
Marcos also directed PHP60 billion to be realigned to the Philippine Health Insurance Corp., supporting healthcare programs aimed at improving access to medications and outpatient services. The Department of Transportation will benefit from a PHP1 billion allocation for the Metro Rail Transit rehabilitation.
Finally, the Department of Labor and Employment will receive PHP18 billion to support employment programs for disadvantaged and displaced workers, as well as integrated livelihood initiatives.
