Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday emphasized the urgent need to hold accountable those responsible for the irregular implementation of government infrastructure projects, particularly concerning flood control.
According to Philippines News Agency, during a presidential luncheon hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines at Diamond Hotel Philippines in Manila, Marcos highlighted that accountability remains a priority as investigations into the flood control scandal continue. He stated that several individuals linked to the scandal have already been detained and charged, underscoring the government's commitment to addressing corruption.
Marcos reiterated his commitment from his State of the Nation Address, assuring that all individuals involved in the anomalous implementation of government infrastructure projects would be held accountable. He emphasized that this accountability is crucial to ensure that the projects effectively deliver the needed services to the public.
Marcos noted that the public has shown significant interest in the ongoing cases, with some individuals already imprisoned. He assured that investigations continue to identify and prosecute others accountable for corruption related to the flood control scandal. The urgency of this accountability is heightened by the increased risks of flooding and other hazards during the rainy season.
He assured the public that the government is taking measures to enhance disaster resilience by strengthening flood mitigation and disaster preparedness. Marcos emphasized the importance of ensuring that investments in these projects translate into real protection for the people and communities.
When questioned about possible charges against his cousin, former House speaker Martin Romualdez, Marcos stated he was not informed about the Office of the Ombudsman's investigation or its timeline. He referred inquiries to the Ombudsman, noting that Romualdez would face multiple cases related to the flood control scandal, as mentioned in his State of the Nation Address on July 27.
