PBBM Strengthens National Task Force Diwalwal

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued Executive Order (EO) 88, strengthening the National Task Force Diwalwal, which oversees mining operations within the Diwalwal Mineral Reservation Area (DMRA), an 81-hectare gold-rich zone in Monkayo, Davao de Oro. Under EO 88 inked by Marcos, the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is designated as the new task force chairperson.

According to Philippines News Agency, it has been observed that unauthorized mining activities have resumed in the DMRA, making it necessary to enhance Task Force Diwalwal to ensure that concerns regarding illegal mining activities, environmental degradation, and socio-economic development in the DMRA are properly addressed. Task force members include a representative from the Office of the President; the secretaries of the Department of National Defense (DND) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG); and the chairperson of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

The National Task Force Diwalwal is tasked with overseeing all mining activities in the DMRA, with the aim of creating an environment conducive to lasting peace and sustainable development. The task force will implement government programs, activities, and projects aimed at the rehabilitation and development of the DMRA. It will also coordinate measures to regulate and rationalize mining activities in the area.

Moreover, the task force is instructed to study and implement forward-looking measures, collaborate, and establish partnerships with government agencies and the private sector. All government agencies and local government units (LGUs) within Davao de Oro are enjoined to support and cooperate with the National Task Force Diwalwal for successful implementation of EO 88.

In other news, President Marcos has declared June 25, 2025, to June 24, 2026, as the Centennial Year of Manlilikha ng Bayan Haja Amina Appi, a master mat weaver from the Sama cultural community in Tawi-Tawi. Haja Amina Appi was recognized for her skill and artistry in traditional mat weaving, gaining national and international acclaim for her intricate designs and vibrant colors.

Proclamation 963 assigns the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to lead, coordinate, and supervise yearlong activities to honor Haja Amina Appi's legacy and promote appreciation of indigenous arts. The Centennial Year aims to pay tribute to her life and work while fostering pride and awareness of the intangible cultural heritage enriching the Filipino identity.

All national government agencies, including government-owned or controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, are directed to support the observance while local government units, non-government organizations, and the private sector are encouraged to participate.
