Bacolod: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday said the Banago Port Improvement Project will serve as a model for the country's terminals and ports to ensure more efficient and modern services for passengers and cargo. After inspecting the upgraded Banago Port, Marcos said the new Port Operations Building (POB) can now accommodate up to 500 passengers, a significant increase from the previous capacity of 50.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos stated, "This is now going to be the standard design for our terminals, for our ports around the country." He emphasized the importance of having a standard design to ensure that passengers, regardless of where they board or disembark, know where to buy tickets, wait, enter, and exit.
Marcos highlighted that the modernization project makes a difference, as the port is now clean and well-maintained, improving the travel experience for Filipinos. He was joined by key officials from the Department of Transportation and the Philippine Ports Authority in unveiling the ceremonial marker for the new POB.
The upgrade addresses the increasing demand for safe, efficient, and future-ready port operations in Bacolod City. The new facility features a modern operations center, allowing the existing terminal to serve passengers exclusively. Other improvements include widening the causeway to enhance road access, improving vehicular flow, and installing a covered walkway to protect passengers from inclement weather.
The modernization of Banago Port is expected to spur economic growth in Negros Occidental, with upgraded infrastructure generating ripple effects across shipping, transportation, retail, tourism, and related sectors. This reinforces the province's position as a vibrant economic hub.
The Banago Port plays a crucial role in passenger transportation, Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) services, and the shipment of vital goods such as sugar, rice, and corn that support local and regional economies. It also facilitates easier access to nearby tourist destinations, including Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary, Patag in Silay City, and Lakawon Island.
