Manila: 'Work is never over,' President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated on Tuesday, urging newly promoted Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) officers to 'lead with purpose and serve with courage' in their mission to defend Philippine waters. During the oath-taking ceremony at Malaca±an Palace, Marcos highlighted the Coast Guard's vital role in securing the nation's maritime domain through patrols and alliances with countries like the United States and Japan.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos stressed the significance of the PCG's presence in the West Philippine Sea. Their patrols across the Kalayaan Island Group, the Philippine Rise, and other maritime zones underscore the country's unwavering commitment to its sovereign rights. He emphasized that the PCG's duties not only involve territorial protection but also define and defend the Republic of the Philippines' territory on the global stage.
Marcos assured the PCG of his administration's commitment to enhancing personnel capabilities with advanced vessels, technologies, and support systems. Initiatives like the Comprehensive Social Benefits Program and the Free Legal Assistance for Military and Uniformed Personnel Act are designed to support PCG personnel, especially those facing charges related to their official duties.
The President commended the PCG's role as a 'trusted guardian of peace and justice at sea,' citing the response to the MT Terra Nova oil spill as a pivotal moment. The PCG's swift and decisive actions prevented further damage to marine ecosystems. Between January 2024 and March 2025, the PCG conducted approximately 2.7 million inspections, ensuring vessel safety and emergency readiness, demonstrating their vast responsibility and determination.
Marcos lauded the PCG's dedication to safety and rescue operations, with nearly 45,000 seaborne missions and over 3.1 million square nautical miles of patrols. The Coast Guard's response to over 2,000 maritime incidents and the rescue of nearly 4,500 individuals underscore their commitment to safety and survival.
The PCG's enforcement of environmental standards through nearly 18,000 inspections and 555 shore-based patrols ensures operators respect Philippine waters. Nearly 600 individuals have been held accountable for illegal maritime activities following 33,000 sea marshaling operations.
Marcos highlighted the PCG's commitment to sovereignty and integrity, with 130 maritime patrols and domain awareness activities. The distribution of 36 high-speed rigid boats across PCG districts enhances rapid deployment and interdiction capabilities, reinforcing the mission to uphold dignity, integrity, and strength.
