Northern Mindanao: Northern Mindanao's trillion-peso Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) is expected to maintain its momentum following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s inauguration of key infrastructure and agriculture projects in Misamis Oriental province on Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ma. Estrella Luz Pe±aloza, officer in charge and chief economic development specialist of the National Economic and Development Authority 10 (Northern Mindanao), stated that the expanded Balingoan port and the new Balingasag coconut processing plant would significantly stimulate economic activity for residents, tourists, and traders. "Coconut is a major agricultural driver in our region, contributing to 80 percent of our regional growth. This processing plant will be instrumental in helping coconut farmers enhance their production and income," she said.
In Balingasag town, the President led the turnover ceremony for the PHP350 million integrated coconut processing facility, funded by the Department of Agriculture. He also inaugurated the PHP430.3 million port expansion project in the Balingoan municipality. During his visit to Cagayan de Oro City, Marcos also distributed 91 medical transport vehicles to local government units across Mindanao.
Dr. Janith Aves, director of the Philippine Statistics Authority 10, reported that Northern Mindanao's GRDP in 2024 reached PHP1.043 trillion, marking a 6 percent growth. This represents an increase from the 5.2 percent growth, equivalent to PHP984.17 billion, recorded between 2022 and 2023. "This achievement makes Northern Mindanao one of only six regions in the Philippines to have attained a GRDP exceeding the trillion-peso mark," Dr. Aves said. She further explained that a stronger GRDP typically translates to increased labor and business opportunities, as well as greater investments for local government units.
