Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday assured his administration will pursue the investigation against criminal syndicates behind the disappearance of missing sabungeros (cockfight enthusiasts). During his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos said a whole-of-government approach is in place to solve the crime involving them, and the government will not spare any influential persons which may be included in the investigation.
According to Philippines News Agency, Julie Patidongan, alias Totoy, earlier said the disappearances of the sabungeros were part of orders by a syndicate controlling the multi-billion-peso cockfight industry, which saw marked growth when it went online during the pandemic. He claimed that the so-called "Alpha" group was composed of 20 businessmen and influential investors controlling all aspects of the games.
A number of incumbent and former police officers and businessmen have been named in the ongoing investigations. Marcos emphasized that the entire government is working to solve the cases of the missing sabungeros, and there will be no leniency for civilians or officials involved, regardless of their prominence or wealth.
Marcos stated that those responsible will face severe penalties for their involvement in these crimes. The President's commitment underscores the administration's resolve to address the issue and bring justice for the affected individuals and their families.
