QUEZON: Several towns on Polillo Island in Quezon province experienced power outages and unstable communication lines due to the onslaught of Super Typhoon Pepito (international name Man-yi) on Sunday. According to Philippines News Agency, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC)-Calabarzon reported that the typhoon severely affected the region, causing significant disruptions. Reyan Derrick Marquez, chief of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Division and spokesperson for the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Calabarzon, provided updates in a phone interview. He detailed that Jomalig town was hit by heavy rains and strong winds early Sunday morning, leading to a power outage at around 3:30 a.m., although communication lines remained stable. In the town of Burdeos, residents experienced power outages from 2 a.m., accompanied by heavy rains, strong winds, and unstable communication lines. Meanwhile, Polillo town reported power outages at 7 a.m., along with heavy rains and st rong winds, but communication lines stayed operational. The towns of Panukulan and Patnanungan were also affected. Panukulan faced moderate to heavy rains with no mobile signal, and Patnanungan experienced light rains with unstable communication, though power remained unaffected in these areas. Marquez highlighted that 33,959 individuals or 11,346 families across the region complied with preemptive evacuation orders. Fortunately, no fatalities, injuries, or missing persons have been reported. "We are working to re-establish stable communication with the towns on Polillo Island as quickly as possible," Marquez stated, expressing relief at the lack of casualties. He added, "We are in a better position compared to the aftermath of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine." Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urge residents to stay vigilant, following updates from local disaster management offices. Efforts to restore essential services and maintain communication with affected towns are ongoing. As of 2 p.m., Polillo Island had been placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4, downgraded from TCWS No. 5.
