Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced on Thursday a significant partnership with Cambodia aimed at enhancing rice production and boosting agricultural trade. This collaboration aligns with the food security objectives set forth by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s administration.
According to Philippines News Agency, DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the potential benefits of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the two nations. He highlighted the opportunities for agricultural cooperation, particularly in the rice sector, which is a staple for both countries. Secretary Laurel stated, "Cambodia will gradually be an important agricultural trading partner as the country diversifies its markets, particularly for rice."
The MOU was formalized on February 11 during the official visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet to the Philippines. This agreement marks a milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries, as it opens avenues for collaboration in various areas of agriculture.
Under this partnership, the DA will explore trading opportunities with Cambodia, focusing on several key areas such as agricultural planning, animal feed development, animal health protection, irrigation management, and agricultural marketing systems. Additionally, the agreement includes the exchange of non-geographical indication-protected plant commodities to foster innovation.
The exploration of trade possibilities will cover a range of agricultural products, including rice, vegetables, and meat, as indicated by the DA. This partnership is expected to strengthen the agricultural sectors of both nations and contribute to their economic growth.
In 2023, the trade volume between the Philippines and Cambodia reached USD80.50 million, with agricultural trade accounting for USD20.40 million, as reported by the Philippine Statistics Authority. This partnership is anticipated to further enhance these figures, solidifying the Philippines and Cambodia as key partners in agricultural trade.
