Tanjay city: The Philippine Army in Negros Oriental is maintaining a vigilant stance against the remnants of the communist New People's Army (NPA), who continue to pose a threat with potential liquidation activities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Capt. Marlon Mopiang, public information officer of the Army's 302nd Infantry Brigade based in Tanjay City, confirmed that at least four fatalities in Negros Oriental this year have been attributed to NPA actions. These incidents occurred in July and September across Tayasan, Guihulngan City, and Canlaon City.

Legal proceedings are underway, with one case already filed in court and another awaiting a subpoena for the respondent. However, the families of two victims have chosen not to pursue legal action. Brig. Gen. Jason Jumawan, commander of the Army's 302nd brigade, reported that the NPA has taken responsibility for these killings.

Jumawan explained that while the overall peace and order situation in Negros Oriental is relatively stable, certain northern areas remain affected by NPA activities. Although the guerrilla fronts in these regions have been dismantled, remaining elements of the communist terrorist group (CTG) continue to execute limited tactical offensives. The primary targets are individuals perceived to have affiliations with the military or police, or those who have allegedly committed offenses against the NPA.

As the anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines on December 26 approaches, the Army is intensifying its counter-insurgency operations. Recently, government troops engaged suspected NPA remnants in an encounter in Himamaylan, Negros Occidental. Jumawan noted that the insurgents frequently move between the Negros provinces as they evade the relentless pursuit by government forces.
