Airdrie: The Philippine Embassy in Canada has joined the inauguration of the Dr. Jose Rizal Reading Room at the Airdrie Public Library, a cultural initiative that highlights the life and legacy of the national hero for Filipino and Canadian communities in Alberta.

According to Philippines News Agency, Ambassador Jose Victor Chan-Gonzaga led the opening ceremony on Nov. 27, following a wreath-laying activity at the Rizal Monument in Airdrie Park. The project was spearheaded by the Knights of Rizal (KOR) Airdrie Chapter, in cooperation with community partners and donors.

Local officials, including Airdrie Mayor Heather Spearman, representatives of the Filipino community, and officers and members of the KOR attended the twin events. Chan-Gonzaga praised the KOR for its efforts to promote Rizal's teachings abroad, noting that the reading room offers a space where Filipinos and Canadians can deepen their appreciation of Philippine history and values.

'Jose Rizal embodies who we are as a people. He fought for what we Filipinos embrace-the importance of the individual, and of freedom, human rights, and democracy," he said. "These are values that we share with Canada," he added.

He expressed hope that the learning space would inspire communities in Alberta and help introduce Rizal's legacy to younger generations. The program included messages from partners, the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and the unveiling of Rizal's signature.

Chan-Gonzaga also praised the leadership of the KOR Airdrie Chapter and reiterated the Embassy's commitment to supporting initiatives that preserve cultural heritage and strengthen community pride.
