Pasay city: The Philippines and the European Union (EU) have officially upgraded their relationship to an 'enhanced partnership', facilitating more frequent high-level dialogues and cooperation on broader issues. The announcement was made on Friday during a joint statement signing by Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and visiting EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, taking place on the sidelines of the week-long Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

According to Philippines News Agency, the newly formed partnership aims to foster regular high-level dialogues, enhance coordination on foreign and security policy, and strengthen cooperation in key areas such as trade, climate change, digitalization, and connectivity. Kallas emphasized the significance of this upgraded relationship, noting that it is not merely a new label but a commitment to addressing mutual interests that impact citizens.

Prior to the signing, Lazaro and Kallas conducted a bilateral meeting to discuss regional and international developments, including ASEAN-EU relations, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the EU's support for the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea, and other pressing global issues. Lazaro highlighted that these discussions underscored the depth of mutual interests and the shared commitment between the Philippines and the EU.

The enhanced partnership focuses primarily on two key priorities: the green and digital transitions, and good governance and the peace process in Mindanao. Lazaro expressed confidence that the time is right for elevating relations, reflecting the growing bond between the Philippines and the European Union.
