Manila: The Philippines and India have formalized their relationship with the signing of 13 new bilateral agreements across various sectors, including defense, maritime security, law enforcement, digital technology, tourism, and outer space. This significant development marks the elevation of their ties to a Strategic Partnership. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were present to witness the exchange of agreements during a closed-door bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House.
According to Philippines News Agency, the key agreements include the Exchange of Declaration on the Establishment of Strategic Partnership and the Plan of Action for its Implementation from 2025 to 2029. The two nations also established Terms of Reference for Air, Army, and Navy Staff Talks between their respective armed forces. Additionally, they agreed on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and a treaty for the transfer of sentenced persons.
The agreements further encompass a Programme of Cooperation in Science and Technology for 2025-2028, an Implementation Program for Tourism Cooperation, and a Memorandum of Understanding on Digital Technologies. The countries also signed a Statement of Intent between their space agencies to collaborate on the peaceful uses of outer space. Enhanced maritime cooperation was formalized between the Indian and Philippine Coast Guards, along with a Cultural Exchange Programme.
This diplomatic milestone occurs on the second day of President Marcos' five-day state visit to India, his first since taking office in 2022. His itinerary includes meetings with business leaders and a visit to Bengaluru, India's technology hub, to engage with industry leaders.
