Candon city: The Philippines takes on Uzbekistan in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women's Cup which kicks off Saturday at Candon City Arena in Ilocos Sur. Twelve of the continent's top women's teams are seeing action for 10 days in the event presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
According to Philippines News Agency, Candon City Mayor Eric Singson welcomed the participants with a dinner on Thursday night. 'As a developing city, we have prepared the very best that we can offer. While events of this magnitude are often hosted by major metropolitan centers and capital cities, we embraced this challenge with enthusiasm, determination, and a commitment to excellence,' Singson said in a news release. He expressed hope that the tournament would be remembered not only for its success but also for the warmth, hospitality, and genuine affection for which Candon City is known.
PSC Chair Patrick Gregorio emphasized that international events create significant impact when brought to communities that embrace the sport. Meanwhile, the FIVB has tasked the AVC with ensuring the successful staging of the competition by closely monitoring the Local Organizing Committee following the suspension of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) on May 29.
Hila Asanuma, the FIVB-appointed Ad Hoc Committee head, stated in an email to AVC president Ramon Suzara that immediate steps are being taken to ensure no operational or organizational gaps arise from the PNVF's suspension. The committee's priorities include supporting the participation of Philippine national teams in upcoming international competitions and ensuring the smooth delivery of scheduled international events.
Suzara expressed gratitude to Candon City and Mayor Singson for their support and highlighted the country's ongoing efforts to strengthen sports development and sports tourism. He noted that the AVC shares the vision of expanding the reach of volleyball across Asia and bringing world-class competition closer to fans.
Leading the Philippine team, Alas Pilipinas, against Uzbekistan are Alyssa Valdez, 32, and Jovelyn Gonzaga, 34, with the match set for 3 p.m. The day's games also feature Vietnam against Lebanon at 9 a.m., Kazakhstan against Hong Kong at 12 noon, Iran against Indonesia at 6 p.m., and South Korea against Kyrgyzstan at 9 p.m.
